I Switched to a Mac - Hither Are The Notes

I exchanged.  It happened about 2 weeks ago, I reached a Macbook my basal computer for the first time.  We’ve had a Mac around the house for a while, but I’ve been firm to my minuscule Sony Vaio, which has been generally unflawed for about 2.5 years. It was a well one.

But alas, I desired a Mac, and it has got along to go.

Along the way, I’ve been picking out some stream-of-consciousness notes on my perceptions before making any research. I’m utilizing Leopard, btw. Hither functions:

I’m nevertheless geting wind, but today was believably the first that I didn’t reach for the crtl button to copy/paste something.

The Dock is nerveless - I didn’t realise how soft it was to wield. I was seeking menu to add up and withdraw icons - and so felt out that you can simply dredge them to the trash or onto the Dock.

I desire to utilise the desktop as a default place to overleap random files, like I would on the PC - I question if it’s a well place?

Why are in that location no Fav icons in the bookmark toolbar in Firefox?

I enjoy the photos that go on the Mac desktops. Must save updated.

I was lost for a while, not empathizing the product menu at the top. I was seeking “preferences” in other menus - not Product Name, like iPhoto”.

How can I close down all the windows and have the application unfastened at the same time? I know - it’s a mac thing.

We’ve made up one’s mind to catch an Airport Extreme during this process.  We asked a newfangled router and desired to publish wirelessly. In the end, it hired many hours of experimentation, but we paid back both PCs and Macs on a safe network and impressing wirelessly.  My lesson was to pay off each computer printing with a wire firstly, and then move wireless.

I can open up the Mac and it simply sets about.  No more waitressing about.  My PC would rent forever and a day.

Is Text Edit the same as Notepad - just for text files? I take over thus.

Ahh, two-finger scrolling works quite good. I’m used to scrolling on the right side of the touchpad, but this is an soft transition.

I dig up the magnetized power plug, but I don'’t like it’s placement on the side.  I have the computer in my lap a lot, and it constantly comes unplugged when hitting my leg. I venture it may do the same from the back.

It’s e’er intercepted me that the “M” and “W” are the same key, changed state upside down. It appears that way in any case - not sure why that gets my eye.

If I reached Capslock one more time I’m plumping to take it.

I’m receiving used to the Command (apple) button, but man why not merely practice ctrl? I conceive the ctrl button is much better placed for one handed copy/paste/undo, etc. On my keyboard, the “x” is direct above the Apple key. Striking it makes believe me find like I’m instructing guitar.

The screen doesn’t list backward as far as I’d wish.

Why can’t I apple + b to bold something in the browser?

How do I operate up one folder? Solved - Jay learnt me apple + up arrow.

What is this preview thing? I have Adobe Reader, why isn’t it puting to work? Oh, Preview was the default in Firefox.

Spaces appears nerveless. I’m applying it to go between iTunes and FireFox.

We want to master the home stereo from our computers.  Turns out that Airport Express does it genuinely easily.  It was a pain to catch begun, but works like a champ.  We at present have all computers partaking in a single library that exists on an exrternal drive.

When I have two things loose (like 2 browsers) I don'’t see an easy way to switch between then - they get lost behind each other (on the PC they are at the bottom of the screen). What am I lacking?

Do I in truth have to turn out usb devices?  It fathoms like a problem that technology should solve for me.

Looking for the computer runs really really easily.

I’ve held on the previous computer on the network during the transition.  Since they’re planted up on the same network, it is well-heeled to snaffle files.  Simply today, I ordered out the previous computer.

Nega-Watts & Bodyed forth Energy

Acquiring energy from the energy we don'’t use is cheaper than looking for new forms of energy or building new plants. Wha? It’s bare. Energy efficiency measures, according to California legislators, will economize them enough energy to keep off building three immense new plants. Which will fundamentally intend that California’s capacity for energy production will blend in up, earmarking economical expansion, without a like increase in emissions, high-pitched-impact production plants, or fossil fuel consumption. Of course, the idea actually isn'’t new to advocates of green building, but what is new is aggressive programs like this, rewarding power companies for meeting certain benchmarks in reducing consumption. That kind of emphasis is too runing to help with fast-growing, next replacement efforts that try to supercede fossil fuel power production with renewable energy will have an comfortable time of seing a mark that is relatively stationary, kind of than constantly acquiring. In Novel Zealand, meantime, the government is increasing focus on what is sent for implanted energy, differently experienced as the energy that gets in bringing about, in this case, constructing materials. Imbeded energy can be a killer when it revives dark-green building, created most detectable when the energy utilised to create an alternative or energy preserving material is more than what is saved in its use. On the shadier side of the cleantech/dark-green building industry, this is where snake-oil type products might come in in, bright savings where none might be uncommitte (more…)

Talkin’ Bout My Education

Facing backward at my education, I wasn'’t a great student.  I made decent grades and went to a good university and grad school, but school was never my thing.  Looking back, I can pin-point a couple of points at which I lost faith.

It was sixth grade and I was in a math class with Mrs. Paine (it’s dead on target - Paine).  The subject was least usual denominators.  I didn’t get it.  My worksheets added up backward with reddened marks, but I didn’t in truth empathize what I was guessed to be performing.  The class displaced on while I was got up in hearing to memorise the details. Alternatively, what I took was an understanding of the reasoning - not how, but why. It was at this point that I descended behindhand and set about to fear math, as I do today.

Another example was college and grad school - I attended business school and aimed a few accounting classes.  Once more, the tripping bulb simply didn’t get going on. I died, but not because I full empathized the reasoning of Answering for as I do at present.  I commemorate the first day of my first accounting class.  The instructor choked straight into T accounts, debits and credits, revenue and expenses.  I sensed unreasoning-sided.  My first reaction was to judge to con all the debits vs. accredits or else of dealing it from a unspecific perspective of how money flows. I had no context to establish an understanding.

Beting backward, context is what I have e’er missed in education.  If someone could redact a newfangled idea in the context of the existent world or picture me how it enables other things, I would get it.  It’s barely my discovering style - I require the magnanimous picture before the details work any sense.  By plunging straight into T accounts and least coarse denominators, I caught caught up in trying on to con or else of sympathize.  What I asked to cognize was why - why this acts the way it does - and why it matters to me.

Indeed, I suppose the connection to our style of videos is obvious.  They are based on all the things that don'’t work for me in education. When I find out explanations on the Web, the cue me of school - they take on too a great deal.  They sometimes plunk straight into how something figures out and pass little time on context.
